Τεκμήριο Comparisons and applications of bootstrap methods for time series data(2022) Vlachogiorgos, Apostolos; Βλαχογιώργος, Απόστολος; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Statistics; Karlis, Dimitrios; Papastamoulis, Panagiotis; Pedeli, XanthiIn this project we examine the performance of block bootstrap methods under different block length selection techniques. Our goal is to compare these techniques in order to get the one that produces the “optimal” block length. This problem is of crucial importance, due to the fact that block bootstrap methods much depend on the selection of block length parameter. We conducted an extensive Monte Carlo simulation with different models and various values for their parameters. We used the well known methods HHJ and NPPI that are MSE-optimal as well as a method of Politis and White (2004) for two of the block bootstrap methods as they proposed. However, we did not stop there. We proposed four new methods to use as block length selection techniques and the results were clearly in favor of them. The two of these methods using a version of Quadratic loss function were in most cases the dominant ones, with the second of them (as we presented them in this project) being the “winner”. Furthermore, we compared the block bootstrap methods as well as the block length selection techniques with INAR models, which are time series modelling count data. The estimation of the parameters for these models is cumbersome so we wanted to know how well they are able to perform. Lastly, we performed the analysis in a real dataset which we modelled with as INAR(4) and the results in this case were mixed, yet again in favor of the new proposed methods.Τεκμήριο Distance correlation(02/10/2021) Panagoulias, Ioannis; Παναγούλιας, Ιωάννης; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Statistics; Papastamoulis, Panagiotis; Pedeli, Xanthi; Karlis, DimitriosDistance correlation is a new measure of dependence analogous to Pearson correlation. However, unlike the classical definition of correlation, the distance correlation can be defined for X and Y in arbitrary dimensions. In addition, the distance correlation is zero if and only if the random vectors are independent, something which is not true for the Pearson correlation. These two remarkable properties allow for detecting non-linear dependencies among random vectors, leading this new measure to be used to a number of applications. The current thesis aims to introduce distance correlation and review its development.Τεκμήριο Distance-based methods for clustering mixed type data: a review and comparison study with Gower’s coefficient(24-10-2022) Hobbs-Ismeris, Alexia-Elizabeth; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Statistics; Karlis, Dimitrios; Pedeli, Xanthi; Papageorgiou, IouliaΗ συσταδοποίηση αποτελεί μια δημοφιλής προσέγγιση σε εφαρμογές εξόρυξης δεδομένων από μεγάλους όγκους δεδομένων για την ανακάλυψη, διαχείριση, ανάλυση και εξαγωγή χρήσιμων πληροφοριών. Όλα τα εξεταζόμενα μέτρα ομοιότητας συγκρίνονται ως προς την ποιότητα των παραγόμενων συστάδων με τη χρήση του δείκτη Rand, και συνεπώς εξάγονται συμπεράσματα για την αποτελεσματικότητα των μέτρων ύπο διαφορετικές συνθήκες.Τεκμήριο An econometric analysis of high-frequency financial data(12/09/2021) Lamprinakou, Fiori; Λαμπρινάκου, Φιόρη; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Statistics; Papaspiliopoulos, Omiros; Demiris, Nikolaos; Pedeli, Xanthi; Papastamoulis, Panagiotis; Tsionas, Mike; Damien, Paul; Dellaportas, PetrosWe present and compare observation driven and parameter driven models for predictinginteger price changes of high-frequency financial data. We explore Bayesian inferencevia Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) for the observationdriven model activity-direction-size (ADS), introduced by Rydberg and Shephard [1998a,2003]. We extend the ADS model by proposing a parameter driven model and use a Bernoulligeneralized linear model (GLM) with a latent process in the mean. We propose a new decompositionmodel that uses trade intervals and is applied on data that allow three possible tickmovements: one tick up price change, one tick down price change, or no price change. Wemodel each component sequentially using a Binomial generalized linear autoregressive movingaverage (GLARMA) model, as well as a GLM with a latent process in the mean. We perform asimulation study to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed parameter driven models usingdifferent algorithms within a Bayesian framework. We illustrate the analysis by modelling thetransaction-by-transaction data of of E-mini Standard and Poor’s (S&P) 500 index futures contracttraded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange’s Globex platformbetween May 16th 2011 andMay 24th 2011. In order to assess the predictive performance, we compare the mean square error(MSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) criterion, as well as four scalar performance measures, namely, accuracy, sensitivity, precision and specificity derived from the confusion matrix.Τεκμήριο The effect of good and bad news on tourism business shareholders: a time series analysis(04-10-2022) Pandi, Despoina-Styliani; Πανδή, Δέσποινα-Στυλιανή; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Informatics; Vrontos, Ioannis; Pedeli, Xanthi; Livada, AlexandraΟ βασικός στόχος της παρούσας διπλωματικής εργασίας είναι να ερευνηθούν οι επιπτώσεις της πανδημίας του Covid-19 στην οικονομική ανάπτυξη μετοχών τουριστικών επιχειρήσεων παγκοσμίως. Τέλος, τα καθημερινώς δηλωμένα κρούσματα και οι πολιτικές που εφαρμόσθηκαν σε κάθε χώρα κατείχαν σημαντικό ρόλο στην απόδοση των περισσότερων μετοχών.Τεκμήριο Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) product similarities evaluation and visualization based on customer transaction sales(2021) Kostopoulou, Frideriki D.; Κωστοπούλου, Φρειδερίκη Δ.; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Statistics; Karlis, Dimitrios; Pedeli, Xanthi; Papastamoulis, PanagiotisIn the retail, market basket analysis is a set of statistical affinity calculations that facilitate shop owners more completely comprehend, and ultimately serve, their clients by highlighting purchasing patterns. The idea is that combinations of products most frequently occur together in orders, namely, customers who purchase a certain item (or group of items) are more likely to purchase another specific item (or group of items). The goal of this dissertation is to discover and visualize possible measures of similarity of FMCG products in the category of “juices” based on the annual transaction data of the customers. Our approach is based on examining pairs of goods and constructing models that we could evaluate them. After construction of models, in the second part, we classify both juices and consumers into reasonable groups. Finally, it is presented the overall conclusions of the dissertation.Τεκμήριο Modelling multivariate time series for count data(06-2011) Pedeli, Xanthi; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Statistics; Karlis, D.The study of time series models for count data has become a topic of special interest during the last years. However, while research on univariate time series for counts now flourishes, the literature on multivariate time series models for count data is notably more limited. The main reason for this is that the analysis of multivariate counting processes presents many more difficulties. Specifically, the need to account for both serial and cross–correlation complicates model specification, estimation and inference. This thesis deals with the class of INteger–valued AutoRegressive (INAR) processes, a recently popular class of models for time series of counts. The simple, univariate INAR(1) process is initially extended to the 2–dimensional space. In this way, a bivariate (BINAR(1)) process is introduced. Subsequently, the time invariant BINAR(1) model is generalized to a BINAR(1) regression model. Emphasis is given on models with bivariate Poisson and bivariate negative binomial innovations. The properties of the BINAR(1) model are studied in detail and the methods of moments, Yule-Walker and conditional maximum likelihood are proposed for the estimation of its unknown parameters. The small sample properties of the alternative estimators are examined and compared through a simulation experiment. Issues of diagnostics and forecasting are considered and predictions are produced by means of the conditional forecast distribution. Estimation uncertainty is accommodated by taking advantage of the asymptotic normality of maximum likelihood estimators and constructing appropriate confidence intervals for the h–step–ahead conditional probability mass function. A generalized specification of the BINAR(1) process, where cross–correlation between the two series receives contribution from two different sources, is also discussed. In this case, we mainly focus on a specific parametric case that arises under the assumption that the innovations follow jointly a bivariate Poisson distribution. The resulting joint distribution of the bivariate series is identified as an 8–parameters bivariate Hermite. At a second stage, the BINAR(1) process is extended to the multi–dimensional space. Thus, we define a multivariate integer–valued autoregressive process of order 1 (MINAR(1)) and examine its basic statistical properties. Such an extension is not simple and we emphasize on problems that occur, relating to selecting a reasonable innovation distribution as well as on problems related to inference. Apart from the general specification of the MINAR(1) process, we also study two specific parametric cases that arise under the assumptions of a multivariate Poisson and a multivariate negative binomial distribution for the innovations of the process. To overcome the computational difficulties of the maximum likelihood approach we suggest the method of composite likelihood. The performance of the two methods of estimation (i.e. maximum likelihood and composite likelihood) is compared through a small simulation experiment. Extensions to incorporate covariance information are also discussed. The proposed models are illustrated on multivariate count series from the fields of accident analysis, syndromic surveillance and finance.Τεκμήριο Popularity and usage of statistical - data science software(01-02-2023) Κιρίλλοβ, Κωνσταντίνος; Kirillov, Konstantinos; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Statistics; Pedeli, Xanthi; Karlis, Dimitrios; Papastamoulis, PanagiotisΣτόχος αυτής της εργασίας είναι η συλλογή, η παρουσίαση και η ανάλυση της δημοτικότητας των στατιστικών εργαλείων που επιλέχθηκαν στα πλαίσια της έρευνας. Such datacan be the prices of some shares on the stock exchange, the murders in different regions for a certain period of time or the arrivals at the differentairports of a specific country. In the literature there are categories of modelscapable of describing such data as parameter driven models and observationdriven models. Observation driven models are very popular for describingsuch data due to their ease in estimating parameters which is not true forparameter driven models. In this thesis, to emphasizing the advantages of parameter driven models, we present some of them that are flexible to describedata that evolve over time and describe cross-correlation, autocorrelationand overdispersion. Specifically, we will describe five parameter driven models, the State Space Multivariate Poisson model (SSMP), a doubly stochasticmodel with latent factors, multivariate Poisson scaled beta (MPSB) models, a dynamic factor model and the hierarchical Markov switching model(HMSM). All models to be presented are models that use modern numericalmethods for parameter estimation and the suitability of these methods hasbeen documented with examples.Τεκμήριο Statistical modelling in actuarial applications(02/05/2021) Panagou, Georgios; Πανάγου, Γεώργιος; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Statistics; Pedeli, Xanthi; Papastamoulis, Panagiotis; Karlis, Dimitrios; Bermudez, LuisMultivariate statistical modelling in insurance data from a Spanish insurance company.
